We travelled to Creswick for Round 2, with mostly positive results across the football board. The Seniors and Under 18’s claimed their first wins of the season, whilst the 15’s and 12’s picked up win number 2.
After a 2 point loss in round 1, the Seniors were looking to bounce back against a competitive Creswick outfit. This showed in the first 10 minutes, with the Lakies exploding out of the blocks to kick the first 4 goals of the game, all to Vice-Captain James Pratt at full forward. The second and third terms saw a more evenly balanced arm wrestle as the rain came and slowed down the pace of the game. Leading by 5 goals at three-quarter time there was an emphasis on finishing the game strongly and getting reward for controlling majority of the football throughout the day, and they did just that. Kicking 5 goals to 1 in the final term to run out 52 point winners.
“I think going down by a small margin the previous week could have hampered our confidence, but it was the exact opposite. We came out strong and stamped our authority, then finished with plenty of run and dominance, which is what we needed to do. We had 6 outs from round 1 and 5 Senior debutants (to go with 4 from round 1), who all contributed to the win and played their role. It is very excited to have these guys come through and ” – Senior Coach, Nick Willox.
Best players included James Pratt again who kicked 4 goals, Charlie Martin who will continue to improve each game across half-forward, Tom Martin and Jason Rae controlling the backline were excellent, newly recruited ruckman Tom McKechnie showed his natural ability, and ever consistent Brenton Powell through the middle.
With the Senior team having 6 outs, it affected the lineup for the Reserves team. Meaning more new faces getting the call up but also adds to the depth of the overall list. Creswick being the 2019 Premiers, it was always going to be a challenging day, but the Lakies were very competitive in the first half trailing by just 24 points at the main break. Creswick came out strong in the third quarter kicking 5 goals to 1. Eventually running away to win by 85 points.
“Another really competitive game against last seasons premiers. Both new and old boys stood up and played some good footy in patches. A win is not far around he corner” – Reserves Coach, Olly Ross
Best players included new players L. Vercoe, running all day, and C. Charters strong in defence. Along with N. Beasley, G. Tyndall playing great games.
After struggling the week before against a quality outfit, the young Lakies played brilliant football for three quarters to get their first win of the season by 49 points. A stalemate first quarter saw 0 goals being scored, before Learmonth kicked 10 of the next 13 goals to produce a great victory and build some confidence going forward.
“The beauty about this side they are still understanding the way each other play, this side can only get better. Great to see the way they ran out the game without any rotations for the bulk of the last quarter” – Under 18’s Coach, Jim Ford
Best players for the team were S. Andrews, A. Hare, D. Fisher, E. Hughes, N. Hutchinson, Z. Andrews.
The Under 15’s continued their dominate winning ways kicking a big 16.23-119 scoreline. They set up the game with a 7 goal first quarter, and were able to hold Creswick scoreless for the day.
“Another very complete team performance from the U/15’s saw the boys score a commanding victory over Creswick, who failed to score. 4 first quarter goals from vice captain Ryan Harbour set the game up for Learmonth, and then a commanding 4 quarter performance from captain Ashton McLennan ensured his team stayed focussed. Rohan Flowers also had a great game against his former club. It is most pleasing to see such an even contribution from the entire group, with new players to the club through to the graduating U/12’s all playing a vital role each week. If this can be maintained, this team should look forward to a very rewarding season 2021” – Under 15’s Coach, Jim Haire
The Under 12’s team produced another great win with McKerrow kicking 4 goals to lead the way.
“Another fantastic win buy our kids yesterday. The team work they showed and the sharing of the ball was great to see there training is paying off on game day. Well done kids” – Under 12’s Coach, Aaron Thompson
Best players C. Faneco, H. Burston, T. McErlain, C. Kerr.
